HackerTube vs YouTube: what changes when the algorithm is Hacker News
Same videos, same player. The difference is who decides what you see.
| YouTube | HackerTube | |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Everything uploaded | 6,454 videos that cleared a public, stated bar |
| What ranks a video | Predicted watch time and clicks for you, specifically | How many different months HN users recommended it, 2007–2026 |
| Thumbnail | The uploader's custom image | A frame from the middle of the video |
| Why you see it | Not explained | The actual comments, with links to the threads |
| Accounts | Required for history, likes, subscriptions | None; your list lives in your browser |
| Tracking | Extensive | Privacy-enhanced embed; no analytics tied to you |
| Freshness | Real time | Slow by design; a video needs months of recommendations to enter |
| Blind spots | Whatever you have not clicked on yet | Whatever HN does not talk about: most non-English content, most entertainment, most music |
| Who it is for | Everyone | People who read HN, or wish their feed did |
What HackerTube is better at
Finding the talk you will still be thinking about next year. The three-people, three-months rule means every video has been vouched for by strangers who had no stake in your watch time, repeatedly, over time. The middle-frame thumbnails remove the thumbnail arms race entirely. And the "why" is on the page: you can read exactly what people said before you commit an hour.
What YouTube is better at
Almost everything else: breadth, recency, non-technical subjects, non-English content, music, live events, a channel you already follow. HackerTube is a filter, not a catalog. It is also a snapshot of one community's taste: strong on software, mathematics, physics, urbanism, computing history and conference talks; thin on most of what the rest of the world watches.
Where this edition sits
HackerTube Watch is the same list with a page for every video, topic and channel, the HN comments shown inline, a few extra ranked views, and a pipeline to add new recommendations after the original export. If you want the original interface, with playlists and semantic search, it is at hackertube.org.
Questions
Is HackerTube a YouTube replacement?
Not for everything. It is a replacement for the YouTube home page and its recommendations. The videos still play from YouTube, through the privacy-enhanced embed, and nothing here hosts video.
Does HackerTube have everything YouTube has?
No, and that is the point. YouTube has hundreds of millions of videos; HackerTube has 6,454, chosen because at least three Hacker News users recommended each one in at least three different months.
Which should I use?
Use YouTube to find a specific video or a channel you already follow. Use HackerTube when you have an evening and want something that people you would probably respect kept recommending for years.
