Used mostly as a punchline or example of cheesy, unrealistic Hollywood depictions of hacking and over-stylized tech UIs.
A short clip from the 1995 film Hackers in which the characters attempt to hack the Gibson supercomputer, shown with flashy stylized visuals of digital intrusion.
The book was released in 1984. Could it be that his descriptions of tech were just true to the times? I imagine his stylistic embellishments were also important in the same way older movies about technology (e.g. Hackers[0]) stylize digital events. [0]: [this video]
I only watched a few episodes, but the whole "She needs to learn to hack in 24 hours" bullshit was a little too much for me. Everything she was doing could have been a script. There was 0 reason to have her punching in commands like that, and either way that's simply using Linux. 'python hack-it.py' would have sufficed. If you haven't seen it, it wasn't much better than this: [this video] and at least that was entertaining.

These are great to look at for something like tornado data, specifically because you probably don’t care at all about what the data tells you. For a while I was a data science consultant and then chief data scientist at a major organization, and all throughout, the most common request was for an interface that looked like “Minority Report”. I don’t even remember what that was, but, in almost all cases, these visualizations are something like corporate edutainment. If you are looking for an answer to a question, it is usually a number. Visualization can be useful if you don’t know why you are looking at the data in the first place, and even then, there is a choice between a chart that is made for understanding the data, and a ‘visualization’ that is made for entertaining the viewer. When I hear about VR/AR in data science, this is what I think of: [this video]
when i hear bollocks like "agentic UX" i think of things like this [this video] i feel like someone high up in microsoft probably has this pinned in a epic or something somewhere
