HN references it as a demo of Project Tango's computer vision, including its use of monocular structure from motion.

Google ATAP's short 2014 introduction to Project Tango, a mobile device effort to give phones and tablets a human-scale understanding of space and motion. It pitches ideas like indoor navigation and games that interact with your physical space.

[this video] 19 second mark shows they are using monocular structure from motion. Some Japanese Uni has a working solution(HDL inside FPGA) doing same thing too [link] you can try it yourself, code is on github [link] [link]

Another way of doing this is something like Google's project tango, right? [0][1] So you can build and code this up (which sounds like a fun project) or if you're lazy or lack the time you can buy a $512 portable device that probably has an app or two to do 3D scanning out of the box. Both approaches have their pros/cons but both are pretty neat and it's exciting that it should only be cheaper and easier for hobbyists to play with in the years to come. [0] [this video] [1] [link]
