Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026
HN recommends it as a gripping entry point into speedrunning and as a model of a well-made history video.
Summoning Salt traces the speedrunning history of Mario Kart 64's Choco Mountain track and its famous shortcut, through the successive record holders and discoveries. It carries an epilepsy warning for flickering lights.
“I didn't realize I cared about speed-running until I saw this YouTube video from Summoning Salt” (HN, 2018)
Summoning Salt makes great videos. The SMB1 video has already been linked, but I also love his video on the Choco Mountain track in Mario Kart 64. It has some great livestream captures which show records being broken, and contextualizes them well enough to give them some pathos: [this video]
