Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026

HN points to it as a rare Hollywood hacking scene that uses real tools and a plausible, era-appropriate exploit.

A very short clip from The Matrix Reloaded in which Trinity runs nmap and then uses an SSH exploit. The scene is notable for showing a real tool.

“The Matrix Reloaded features Trinity correctly using nmap to find an exposed SSH server” (HN, 2022)

It makes sense actually. The imaginary world in the matrix trilogy is inspired from the unix hacker folklore [1]. So if you're a hacker, it's not surprising that what's on your screen looks like what's on the screens in the Matrix. [1] as shown here [this video]

Didn't know this but yup: [this video] - scene from The Matrix Reloaded where Trinity uses nmap and sshnuke. Looks like there's a re-creation of the on-screen display here: [link] but the typing is faster than in the movie. Also, the Jurassic Park scene to which you're referring was a real picture of SGI IRIX's 3D file manager. It was visual fluff, but functional visual fluff.

While I completely agree with you, as a very minor point, The Matrix Reloaded features Trinity correctly using nmap to find an exposed SSH server, and then correctly using SSHNuke to exploit an era-appropriate CRC vuln -- [this video]
Accurate depiction of nmap and an era-appropriate exploit

Here is the scene, your link is a little hard to see what it's trying to show, but great reference: [this video] this looks plausible enough.
Plausible hacking scene
