HN uses it as a joke reference whenever a startup pitch or market-sizing claim sounds naive or absurd.
Ali G pitches his ice cream glove idea to marketing professionals and even talks to Donald Trump. It is a comedy sketch of a clueless entrepreneur seeking investment.
The "Cheap custom suits for Men" idea is described simply as "$100 custom suits for men.". This reminds me of the Ali G episode where he presents his idea for the ice cream glove ( [this video] ). The Venn Diagram for $100 custom suits would have "all the people without much money" in one circle, and "all the people who want to be really well-dressed" in the other. The intersection represents a huge market, which means this idea is nothing short of brilliant.
LOL, I love this! Ironic that someone on HN brought up this Ali G video [this video] (where he invents the "ice cream glove" and Donald Trump thought he was going to say ice cream that doesn't melt) in response to an article on the front page today.
Here is Ali G pitching a hoverboard to a VC.. great stuff: [this video] - go to 5:20 on the video. Ali G: "Its a hoverboard" (holding a skateboard with no wheels) Investor: ".. but it doesn't do that" Ali G: "Well, it doesn't do it yet. Thats where you come in - with your science"
> These videos are made so that the delivery manager can understand what the people around him are doing, and so he can explain it to the bean counters. The irony is that concepts that intentionally ignore reality create the impression among those same people who "don't get it" that these concepts not only are grounded in reality, but are as trivial to create as the concept video makes it look. It reminds me of this clip from Ali G: [this video]
> Literally everyone. Everyone needs to move around their city. The size of the market is the size of the total city scale transportation market... Your approach to market sizing is eerily reminiscent of Ali G's[1]. Amusing, but not credible by any standard. [1] [this video]
