Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026

HN posts it as a joke reply whenever people complain about technology, airlines, or AI that would have seemed miraculous not long ago.

A Louis C.K. appearance on Conan in which he argues that everything is amazing and nobody is happy, riffing on how quickly people take modern technology for granted.

So it sounds like Their complaining about the UI of Copilot -Doesn’t seem to be a complaint about current capabilities of AI Hmm [this video]

on HN thread Starlink to start “deprioritizing” traffic after 1TB monthly
Just to be clear here, the reason that you feel that 1TB/30 days from a low orbit satellite ISP (a relatively recent technological development mind you) is insufficient is simply because your family happens to use 1TB/10 days on what is I assume a wired internet connection? "How quickly the world owes him something he knew existed only 10 seconds ago". [this video]

on HN thread Waymo significantly outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
I don't really disagree, but again, I don't understand the point about complaining about "Pfft, Waymo can only operate in good conditions". I mean, it wasn't that long ago when Google's autonomous vehicle tech was first announced and everyone thought it looked like magic. More and more I believe in Louis CK's bit about "everything is amazing and nobody's happy": [this video]

Following HN's guidelines, I'm going to assume that you're a pretty smart person who knows that our northern/southern hemispheres mean that there are only two options for when summer occurs, and when winter occurs, and that they're essentially just opposites of one another. If you're reading it from a southern hemisphere viewpoint and find that it doesn't make sense, isn't it quite simple to just go, "Oh, perhaps it's the opposite?" and apply that? This is hardly the first time I've ever encountered this sort of thing. In fact, as an American, I've had to employ this sort of thinking myself when interacting with people on forums from places like South America and Australia. It's an easy fix, and it's not that big of a deal, honestly - an innocent little side effect of the fact that we're able to communicate at such a global level[1]. :) [1] [this video]

on HN thread LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
Louis CK did a bit on this: [this video] :) My point isn’t that other people shouldn’t be amazed, it’s that I see this recurring assumption they aren’t. How do you know the people holding LLMs to higher standards aren’t also the same people who herald the dawn of a new AI era? Emphasis in the text you quoted: “saying”, not “thinking”.
