HN invokes it whenever people grumble about convenience, technology or AI that would have seemed miraculous not long ago.
A clip of Louis CK on Conan riffing that everything is amazing and nobody is happy, about people complaining over airplane wifi and taking modern technology for granted.
“here is a good Conan clip, with a great title” (HN, 2020)
True, and this bias also applies to a bunch of other day to day things that we take for granted. For the comedic view on this: "Louis CK Everything Is Amazing And Nobody Is Happy" [this video]
Louis CK comedic take on taking modern conveniences for granted.
Just to clarify, that was a Louis CK bit. I enjoy both of their comedic styles. Louis does it in a stand-up special, but here is a good Conan clip, with a great title: [this video]
Louis CK on Conan, great clip about ingratitude for technology.
No I haven't seen that skit, link it if you can. Louis CK tells a similar anecdote on Conan "Everything is amazing and nobody is happy". The passenger beside him is upset that the on-board wifi went down. [this video] The whole clip is hilarious.
Louis CK: >I was on an airplane and there was high speed internet on the airplane… it’s fast, I’m watching YouTube clips, I’m on an airplane. It breaks down, they apologize, and the guy next to me is like “This is bullshit..." >Like how quickly the world owes him something he knew existed only 10 seconds ago? >Flying is the worst one, people come back from flights, they tell you their story and it’s a horror story. They act like their flight was like a cattle car in the 40s in Germany. >"It was the worst day of my life! First of all we didn’t board for 20 minutes. And then we got on the plane and they made us sit there on the runway for 40 minutes. We had to sit there." >Oh really, what happened next, did you fly through the air incredibly, like a bird? Did you partake in the miracle of human flight, you non-contributing zero? >You’re flying! It’s amazing! Everybody on every plane should be constantly going ‘oh my God, wow!’ >You’re sitting in a chair in the sky >….Here’s the thing, people say there are delays on flights. Delays, really? New York to California in 5 hours. That used to take 30 years. And a bunch of you would die on the way there. And have a baby. You’d be a whole different group of people by the time you got there. Now you watch a movie and you take a shit and you’re home. [this video] - his delivery starts at around 2:00 but he starts with additional jokes.
This is very true. Also, it's pretty cool. Most people forget what a difference technology makes and someone should appreciate it. Or to put it another way "Everything is amazing and nobody is happy" [this video]
Louis CK bit about people not appreciating technology.
What is the point of remote start with a modern vehicle in the 21st Century? Report of this blowback reminds me of "Everything Is Amazing, and No One is Happy." [1] Perhaps in the 1970's during Winter in the Northern regions, remote start might have once had a valid reason to exist, but not any more. " Auto experts today say that you should warm up the car no more than 30 seconds before you start driving in winter. "[2] So who are these idiots insisting on wasting their own money and gas for absolutely no personal benefit while spewing atmospheric carbon and air pollution? [1] [this video] [2] [link]
Cited for the idea of ingratitude toward modern conveniences.
I waited for this. I agree with you and always have to think about "Everything is amazing and nobody is happy": [this video] -- and I don't care it's Louis C.K. saying it. Like I don't care if a songs from Michael Jackson is playing. Still true.
Agrees with the bit's message despite the comedian.
This question reminded me of Louis CK from a Conan appearance, "Everything Is Amazing And Nobody Is Happy" He says something very similar. [this video]
I think it's because it's mostly old people which tends to come with being uninspired and jaded from previous hypes. There's always been the same attitude towards cryptocurrency. Young people are drawn to exciting new things that really break open their existing worldviews. Bitcoin was pioneered by teenagers and young men. Also, people in general quickly adapt. LLMs are absolute sci-fi magic but you forget that easily. Here's a comedian's view on that phenomenon [this video]
Comedian's view on people adapting quickly to amazing technology.
The most amazing thing about AI is how it's amazing and disappointing at the same time. Everything is amazing and nobody is happy: [this video] "How quickly the world owes him something, he knew existed only 10 seconds ago"
Applies the bit to AI being amazing yet disappointing.
Reminds me of that Louis CK bit about internet on aeroplanes: [this video] "You’re flying! It’s amazing! Everybody on every plane should just constantly be going: “Oh my God! Wow!” You’re flying! You’re sitting in a chair, in the sky!”"
This reminds me of a Louis CK bit, [this video] . Folding laundry (and more generally, manipulating deformable objects) is actually a pretty tough task for robots. So there has been some research on it, and you can find videos of robots doing it (very slowly). I guess we'll get there eventually, but right now even if it's possible, it's not at a level of speed, robustness and cost where it makes sense.
What is incredible is that people confuse dead nature with the living one. Besides, five minutes ago you didn't even know there is something deep in the ground and now you construct all kind of weird GenZ shenanigan around digging it up... Obligatory, I guess: [this video]
Wow. Thank You for that feedback. It is funny because as you degraded, I agreed more. The dystopian hell scape is on the way. So hard to tell where people are coming from, from posts. Generally, I think part of problem, we are becoming desensitized to progress. [this video]
