Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026

Cited repeatedly in Tesla threads as concrete side-by-side evidence that Tesla's self-parking lags other manufacturers, undercutting its full self-driving claims.

A hands-on comparison of self-parking systems on a Tesla Model S and 3 (including AP1 vs AP2), an Audi e-tron GT, a Ford Mustang Mach-E and a BMW i4 M50. It tests both parallel and perpendicular parking and finds Tesla's newer vision-based parking noticeably weaker than the others.

“All cars nailed the spots they tested flawlessly while the Tesla just straight up didn't see most of the spots.” (HN, 2023)

You spent your whole comment focusing on their self driving claims while ignoring the rest of the company. The rest of the company? You mean the senior management that lord elno raided in an attempt to prop up Twitter? The VW ID4 has numerous complaints about their software and reliability. [this video] [link] [link] That's some impressive software.

This is true to form. Musk recently told a Tesla owner to stop complaining about "full self-driving" not working very well. Musk plainly believes in free speech for himself, but not for others: [link] The reality is Tesla is not competitive with other manufacturers on simple tests like self parking: [this video] Instead of running around trying to suppress "bad press", Tesla should focus on making their cars better.

Tesla certainly delivers cars. But there are parts of it that are quite Theranesque, especially the self driving: * Re-sell third party products for a while ("Until our own offering is ready"). If the recently posted self parking video is to be believed, the in-house products are still not on par with the third party predecessors: [this video] * Pre-sell your product years before it's ready. * Aggressively suppress internal and external criticism. * Avoid objective evaluations of your product.

It's because they've committed to the lie for years now and they've taken people's money on the promise of full self-driving that has still not been delivered. Tesla has falsely claimed that full self-driving will be delivered "next year" for years: [link] Tesla falsely claimed in 2016 that all Teslas had "the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver": [link] And Elon Musk said that without full self-driving Tesla is "worth basically zero": [link] Tesla has pointlessly backed itself into this corner, even though Teslas aren't very good at backing themselves into any space: [this video]

To add to one of your points, The Tesla auto park is legitimately awful. [this video] Every time we try it for a spot to reverse into, the linear regression it must be doing is so apparent. It violently tries to turn left and right rapidly trying to straighten itself. It works better for parallel spots but often gives up half way because it made a bad angle choice. We’ve tried it in various models in addition to our own Model Y. They’re just embarrassingly bad at it.

Someone else on HN commented this the other day. RSymons RSEV did a comparison[0] of the self-park feature of Tesla's compared to three other cars. All cars nailed the spots they tested flawlessly while the Tesla just straight up didn't see most of the spots. When they moved the cars further and further away so that the spot became more obvious it eventually did see the spot but parked over a foot from the curb Tesla seems to have a lot of software issues when it comes to "smart" features like these. I wouldn't be surprised if they are indeed worse than the competition, but I'd love to see a similar comparison [0] [this video]

Good, then there's no reason to rip people off in the meantime. Refund the money now and only charge customers money if and when they deliver actual factual full self-driving. Tesla backed themselves into this corner. They have lied about the state of full self-driving for years and they have failed to deliver on their own self imposed deadlines. Teslas don't even do full self-parking, nevermind full self-driving: [this video] Tesla admits they have failed to deliver (as an attempt to avoid being done for fraud): [link] [link] So, now that Tesla has done the hard thing of admitting to their failure, they can do the easy thing of returning the money.

> People will pay $20K for sport brakes or $10K for an unusual paint color. But they get the brakes and they get the paint. What they get with supposed "full self-driving" is puffery and lies. Musk's public statements around FSD since 2014 have been lies: [link] In 2016 Tesla claimed that all Teslas being produced "will have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver." That was a lie: [link] And these days Teslas can't even do full self-parking: [this video] Now the word is that suckers who paid for FSD in a Tesla with Hardware 3 probably won't get Hardware 4: [link] Tesla was recently done for false advertising around FSD: [link] Tesla also admits they have failed to deliver full self-driving but they think they don't need to refund any money because "failure is not fraud": [link] Despite the admission of failure, Musk is still running around claiming that FSD will one day magically become the "biggest asset value increase of anything in history": [link] It's not even bullshit artistry. It's just bullshit.

Tesla focused on FSD almost exclusively and everything in the car's software suffered because of that and stupid decisions to remove hardware. Autopilot is on a separate branch from FSD, not getting significant updates with the promise that at some point, it'll be merged with the FSD branch and it'll be super awesome - this year for sure, but maybe next year or 10 years after, look we made a robot that's definitely not a guy in a suit and it'll be out in 5 years, maybe 10, it can water plants now!, look a Cybertruck! isn't steel cool, etc When they switched from Mobileye to their own stack, it noticeably regressed in performance, then they worked to get it to work decently, but dropped the radar during Covid, going all in on Vision, regressing it even further. They promised at that time to at some point match the original Autopilot by reintroducing a distance of 1 and a max speed higher than 140 km/h and it's been 2 years since then with nothing on the front. Summon/ Smart summon as the guy in the article points out - is great, but doesn't work without USS sensors, which they removed and the functionality is coming back some day, but likely not soon, because it's not a priority. They've been selling cars for more than a year now that don't have that functionality, even though it's in a package worth 4000 euros that gets you basically nothing. Autopark - same thing, just look at these videos as a comparison - [this video] [link] It's easily the worst out of all manufacturers. In th
