Pointed to in Minetest and spherical-voxel-world threads as a striking example of what the open-source engine can do.
Jeija demonstrates a modified Minetest game with a spherical planet, using a grid transform to make a voxel world round. It includes the orbit math and download links for the spheretest build.
“A minetest developer just recently published a sphere-shaped planet version of minetest” (HN, 2016)
Man, just a few days ago I was bummed that the top comment on most HN stories is critical or dismissive, and now I'm part of the problem. -- People have made some VERY COOL stuff using MineTest. Check out spheretest: [this video]
This reminded me of another attempt, but in Minetest: - [this video] This person has another, more technical video where they talk about the math behind it btw
A minetest developer just recently published a sphere-shaped planet version of minetest: [link] [this video] [link] That's just the thing I love about these smaller voxel games - they may not have a huge userbase, but there is innovation happening.
Minetest had a mod to fake spherical planets using a torus. Main video: [this video] More in depth: [link] The main problem with minetest it is that it seems not complete/done on the art assets and main game, and the devs always say that is intentionally not a Minecraft clone yet people come searching one on the subgames.
